orders.
Restraining orders can be either civil or criminal in origin and in treatment of violators.
A civil restraining order can initially be obtained ex parte. In such case after obtaining the order it must be served upon the
restrained person and a hearing before a judge is scheduled. If granted the restraining order is for a limited period of time but
it can be renewed.
A criminal restraining order is often done pending trial or as a condition of probation.
A restraining order can prohibit not only personal contact but contact by telephone or other electronic means. It may prohibit a
person from contacting or coming within so many yards of the protected person or the protected person's house, vehicle, school or job.
