Probation violations, particularly for felonies are particularly hard to try. When put on probation one gives up many rights. For example one charged with a probation violation does not have the right to a jury and the prosecutor need not prove his or her case beyond a reasonable doubt. Judges tend to be cynical and find violations rather easily. Once a violation is found a judge can sentence a violator to state prison.
