Assault and battery while separate charges are similar and usually refer to the use of force against another.  Battery is generally a misdemeanor while assault can be charged as either a felony or a misdemeanor depending on the amount of injury, whether a weapon was used and on the intent of the suspect. As a felony it may or may not be a strike.
